Thanksgiving Greetings

Just a quick note to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving.  Three days and counting until our wrestling season starts.  This will be my final season and for some of you it will be your first.  Thank you in advance for all the help you will be offering not only this opening weekend but throughout the whole season.  As many of you know this is a "TEAM" sport.  Team meaning both the wrestler and the parents.  We become a family and with that in mind I am thankful to all of my wrestling family for the great responses I have received offering both time and donation.  When we pull together as a family there is nothing our team can't achieve.  I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday.

From Football to Wrestling

The link between football and wrestling is real.  Their are countless football players who are enjoying successful careersin the NFL.  Their are many crossover skills.   Wrestling will teach leverage, quick hands, good hips, balance, explosiveness  but more than anything it helps you with your attitude.   An attitude of its me vs you.  Wrestlers have self discipline and self motivation that you can take to the field and punish your opponents.    Common Misconceptions - "I will have to loose weight" - FALSE - The days of loosing lots of weight in wrestling are gone.  "I wont be as stong if I miss out on weightlifting for a few months." - FALSE - you may see a short drop in max but you will see an increase in cardio but with your body being in better composition you should see increases in maxes and explosions far beyond what you thought possible.
Ray Lewis, Pro Bowl Linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens, was a Florida 4A State Wrestling Champion at 189 lbs.

Message from Coach Roberts

Here is the schedule for next week.
Monday regular school day practice 330-6
Tuesday regular school day practice 330-6
Wed, no school practice 10-12 then move mats to gym.
Thurs thanksgiving no practice no nothing
Fri. practice in main gym after set up. Wrestlers and helpers report at 10.
Sat workers who have signed up report 630. Wrestlers report at 630. (if you did not sign up to work you pay 10. To get in to the matches.) All wrestlers need to be there for  the whole day and stay for cleanup after words. We should be done cleaned, floor swept and all trash removed before 6pm. Yes it is a 12 hour day
.
Notes: no wrestlers will be aloud in the coaches hospitality room. Coaches and officials only. So you need to either pack food or bring money to eat in well stock concession stand. AFTER clean up is done we will all eat in hospitality room. IF there is anything left. Please do not attempt to enter hospitality room as that was a major complaint from coaches and refs in past. They want a place to go and get away from everything for a minute or two.

Jv wrestlers (who are not weighing  in) will be required to attend and stay for whole day. And help with set up and clean up.

Lets make this a good tournament… it takes everyone and we can be good host and still beat their tails on the mat.

Video Website.

Here is the website where the videos of our wrestlers matches will be posted.  Thank you John Isbell for all your hard work.

http://beechwrestling.phanfare.com/

Note from a Senior Mom

Please make sure your wrestler stays until everyone of our wrestlers have finished.  This applies more to individual tournaments then team but it is very important for our wrestlers to have their teammates (and parents who want to stay) cheering them on as the continue.  Our heavyweight is one of the top in the state and the heavyweights are always (or at least seem to be) the last match of the night.  We come as a team and we leave as a team.

Schedule Updates

Schedule Changes and updates that were discussed during the parent team meeting.

Next Tuesday November 15th there will be a match in the field house between Beech, Harpeth and Hillsboro.  Parents are welcome to come watch but space will be VERY limited and you might have to watch through the window on the weight side.  This is just a practice.

Next Thursday November 17th there is a Freshman Only tournament at Wilson Central.  We will need drivers.

December 2nd our wrestlers will be leaving school early (10:30am) and going to Springfield High School for an in-school match in front of the Springfield student body.  Weigh ins will be at 11:30. Parents are welcome to come.

The Varsity and JV were scheduled to go to Harpeth on the 3rd of December.  Now Varsity will be going to Harpeth and the JV will be going to Summit.

We need donations of food we can sell at the concession stand.  If we can get a case of water a case of Gatorade and a case of soda (can or bottles) from each wrestler that would be a huge help. If you drop your cases off at the field house please put your name on them so Renee will know who donated.  Also if you have any connections with companies that would be willing to donate food (ie: donuts, sandwiches, chips, fruit) anything that can be sold at the concession stand.  Everything will need to be individually wrapped.  Please contact Renee Melton 202-5794 and let her know what you can provide.

Wrestlers Poem

My son has joined the wrestling team, I don’t know what to say,
I fear that he will stink like sweat, after practice every day.
Instead he joins the wrestling team, which has no class at all,
My son is watching all he eats, he eats the foods he hates,
He knows what foods are good for him, he has to cut some weight.
He works to learn reversals, and take downs that are planned,
Hand control and when to shoot, and how to pin his man.
His uniform is a singlet, and a thing he calls “headgear”,
That’s all there is, no pads, no fuss, or fancy stuff to wear.
He talks about wrestle offs, and how to take men down,
He shoots, he pins, he’s ready, for any kid in town.
Before I have a chance to cheer, they twist and turn so fast,
My son is eating rubber, with his face upon the mat.
The buzzer sounds and I’m so relieved, to see it’s at an end,
But no, he hasn’t finished yet, he takes the stance again.
They shouldn’t make him do it, I think he’s had enough,
Why does he grovel on his knees, to prove that he is tough.
The referee is watching, each and every move he makes,
My son must know the rules, or learn from his mistakes.
He cannot cheat or hurt his man, or dare to throw a fit,
The ref will give away a point, without discussing it,
With every muscle straining he tries his best to win,
Perseverance is the key, if he wants to make that pin.
Adversity can’t keep him down, they roll and bridge and turn,
My son has found persistence, a lesson he must learn.
His companion is endurance, as he strives until the end,
And if he has the guts, determination is his friend.
It takes a lot of courage, and a certain kind of grit,
Self-reliance, spunk and luck, are all a part of it.
Each wrestler must give his all, no matter what the cost,
His gain will be tenacity, even if he lost.
And when each match is over, the wrestlers will shake hands,
Good sportsmanship’s expected, from every wrestling man.
My son joined the wrestling team, I’m proud to tell you why,
He’s learned the things that make a man, and make a mother cry.

Quote from Dan Gable

As we get ready to head into preseason... Here is a quote from the great Dan Gable... Gold medals are not really made of gold. They are made of sweat, determination, and hard to find alloy called guts.

Fundraiser Opportunity

Calling all wrestling parents – Especially Moms

Here is an opportunity for you to help raise money for next year’s wrestling team.  I have partnered with a friend of mine with Mary Kay to do a fundraiser.  It’s very simple.  All you have to do is open your home and invite your friends for a complementary makeover.  Here is where the fundraising part comes into play.  If your friends, or you, decide to purchase anything, 10% of all sales will go to the Beech High School Wrestling Team.   It’s as easy as that.  Just mention you are with Beech Wrestling and she will do the rest.  Now for the important part, please contact Jodi Henderson at 615-547-9383 (home) or 512-466-8279 (cell).  You can also email her at jodihenderson@marykey.com or visit her website at www.marykay.com/jodihenderson

Thank you for your interest in helping raise money for the Beech High School Wrestling Teams 2011-2012 season.
